Anchor has been brewing its special batch of Christmas Ale since 1975, but it mixes up the recipe every year. This year’s ale is oaky brown with a spicy bite that settles into a mellow fruitiness that’s akin to snaking on a spiced fruitcake.
Indeed, with such an eclectic way of starting a band, it should be no surprise that the band claims some diverse influences such as classic rock, 70s funk, punk, emo, blues, Brit pop, swing and even traditional Indian music, and many of these influences on Studio E’s debut album gives them an oddly familiar yet difficult to pin sound.
For a really festive feel to the meal, break out some bottles of champagne-style beer. These Bière de Champagne brews are highly carbonated, with delicate flavor and a potent alcohol punch. Try Kasteel Cru, a pale pour with notes of apple and citrus and a crisp champagne taste with a touch of sweetness. An even more complex version of a Bière Brut is Malheur Cuvee Royale which has even more fruitiness (apricots, apples, citrus) and a nice dry finish.
U Street has a reputation for trendiness, which may or may not be deserved. The existence of Solly’s certainly helps to keep that reputation in check. The most unpretentious place in the neighborhood, Solly’s is the dive DC needs. On the surface it has almost no charm, no frills, and little to make it stand out. Again, on U Street, that’s what makes it stand out.
A requirement for any sports bar is a quality beer list. Lazy Dog serves an assortment of amber, wheat, IPA and pale ale on tap, along with the standard bottled beers (Amstel, Bud, Coors, Heineken, etc.). Choosing the respective Beer of the Day makes it easier on you and your wallet.
