The Invention of Lying – Rating: C

In this classic case of nice-guy-finishes-first, The Invention of Lying tells the tale of lovable loser Mark Bellison (Ricky Gervais) whose personal and professional life can only be described as pathetic.

Riding on the bromance train, I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell follows narcissistic law student Tucker (Matt Czuchry) and his two man-besties Drew (Jesse Bradford) and Dan (Geoff Stultz) as they travel to faraway strip club Avarice to celebrate Dan’s impending nuptials.

“The Informant!” Grade: A-

If “The Informant!” was a typical work of fiction, its ridiculous twists and playful tone of affable incompetence wouldn’t resonate, but because it recants the actual events surrounding the Archer Daniels Midland price-fixing conspiracy of the mid-1990s and company VP Mark Whitacre’s turn from company scapegoat to high profile whistle-blower, the film’s bombastic inanity becomes disturbingly hilarious.

Taking Woodstock – Rating:C+

When it comes to summer fun, what could be more entertaining than a trip down music lover’s lane, a psychedelic plot line, and a behind-the-scenes look at America’s most (in)famous concert festival? On paper, it sounds groovy, baby.

My One and Only – Rating: B+

My One and Only is loosely based on the teenaged life of 1950s tanned, matinee idol George Hamilton. Portrayed as the more balanced and grounded of Anne’s two sons, George Devereaux aka Hamilton (Logan Lerman) must contend with his mother’s half- baked shenanigans while dealing with his own adolescent need for security, parental guidance and structure.

Inglourious Basterds – Rating: A-

In the curiously spelled Inglourious Basterds Quentin Tarantino once again delivers his usual fare. Movie references? Check. Clever dialogue? Check. And perhaps most importantly, graphic gun-on-gun violence? Check. But while he stuck to his Tarantino-isms, the famed director has lived up to the hype and made a movie that’s packed with action, intrigue, and a heavy dose of comedy.

G.I. Joe – Rating: B-

Who gave movie studios permission to bastardize my childhood favorites? All of the cartoons you watched on Saturday mornings in the 80s are now becoming revamped by studios from ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ to ‘Tranformers.’
