I have been writing for as long as I can remember. Some of my better relationships were long distance ones that relied on snail mail and AT&T. Talk to any of my exes and I am sure they will agree. I like Beer; it makes me a jolly good fellow (I don't know the rest of the song). I want to take this chance to say farewell to a beer in my 'younger' days I was quite familiar with- Olympia. Let's face it folks- we have all had those times when we really wanted to get ripped and we did not have the money for enough Guinness, Bass, or even Bud Lite to do so. For $5 a case of ice cold Olympia sure hit the spot. Recently I learned that the brewery that produced this affordable concoction closed in 2003. I haven't had an Olympia ice cold or otherwise in years, but I must admit to feeling a little nostalgic when I heard the news. I was a little saddened. It's not like I ever intended on drinking this fine brew ever again. Back in the day, Olympia was like one of the gang- now part of the gang ha passed on. Farewell Olympia. Tonight I will tip a Shiner Bock (or two...or three...or four...) in your honor.

Shootin’ The Boot – Who Needs College, Right?

In a town known for beer, Buck fans will have no shortage of options to choose from to enjoy while tailgating. Perhaps since it tends to get a little cold out they may want to tip back a few winter warmers like the Holiday Spice Lager that the Lakefront Brewery creates. This amber colored beer is made with cinnamon, orange zest, clove and generous amounts of honey to give it a rather unique taste. The Mt. Hood hops help balance the flavor in this full-bodied beer that will make you feel like you could take on Jennings after drinking a few (its alcohol content comes in at a hefty 9.5% ABV).

Shootin’ The Boot – And the Rivalry Continues…

Go out to the parking lot prior to the game Texas-Texas A&M game and I would be willing to bet that you will find a few folks drinking a Bombshell Blonde from the Southern Star Brewing Company in Conroe, Texas. These guys have only been brewing this treat for just over a year, having started it in October of 2008. Fermented at a cold temperature in order to give it a nice, clean, easy to drink finish this golden ale will remind of you of yeasty bread flavors with a dominant hops flavor to give it the taste that tailgaters everywhere can enjoy, at 5.25% ABV you’ll have to worry more about missing the game because you are in the bathroom than anything else.

Shootin’ The Boot – A Day for Breaking Records and Crowning Champions

Around this time of year the sports landscape is dominated by the professional football and basketball along with the collegiate version of both. While football and basketball are still a ways away from anointing their respective champions there were a couple in different sports that were crowned last weekend.

Apparently this Jean Christophe Novelli guy can cook; or at least that’s what people that have been to one of his restaurants in London, France, and South Africa think. Now the Frenchman will be taking his lovely and pregnant wife to the U.S. (L.A.) in order to train nine people hoping to learn from the best on their way to becoming the best.

Shootin’ The Boot – Eagles Soar to Victory in Florida as they Qualify for the 2011 RWC

The Eagles qualified for the Rugby World Cup in 2011 with a solid 27-6 victory over the Los Teros of Uruguay Saturday in front of more than 2000 rugby fans at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida.

Fans had to be somewhat concerned going into Saturday’s match again the team from Uruguay. Even though history was on the side of the U.S. which had only lost to the Los Teros once in the last twenty years, they had nearly completed an amazing comeback against the Eagles a week earlier only to fall short by five.

Shootin’ The Boot – Sportsmanship: A Dead and Dying Institution

You here about these stories through various media outlets and it becomes a little disheartening. Athletes use to be figures that could be looked up to an admired. Now they are more or less examples of disrespect for society, decency, and in many cases the rule of law. There are, however, a few shining examples you do not hear enough about.

Shootin’ The Boot – USA Rugby to Qualify?

July 4th was a wonderful day for fans of the Eagles, the U.S. National Rugby team. After a grueling and strategically played 80 minute match the team was one step closer to earning a berth in the 2011 Rugby World Cup with a 12-6 victory over the visiting Canadians.

Super Dave’s Spike-tacular – Rating: B-

Does it seem strange that a man named Einstein would make a living by destroying himself over and over in a series of never-ending catastrophic stunts? It’s actually pretty ingenious, maybe living up to the Einstein moniker, since Super Dave doesn’t actually do any of the stunts. He just makes people laugh with his self-absorbed, ridiculous antics.
