A local favorite for its massive collection of rare European microbrews, specialty meat and cheese trays and large open garden, Spuyten Duyvil feels like a master’s class in obscure beers with little to no concessions for those not up to speed on the Wallonian brewery scene.
Barcade was the venue for the 5th annual Brooklyn Underground Chili Extravaganza (BRUCE), where 10 local chili cooks put their best recipe up for judgment.
In the early 1980s the arcade scene was at the top of its game. With quarter crunching games like “Robotron,” “Donkey Kong” and “Berserk,” these spots drew in huge crowds of kids, teens and young hearted adults all across the country.
If “The Informant!” was a typical work of fiction, its ridiculous twists and playful tone of affable incompetence wouldn’t resonate, but because it recants the actual events surrounding the Archer Daniels Midland price-fixing conspiracy of the mid-1990s and company VP Mark Whitacre’s turn from company scapegoat to high profile whistle-blower, the film’s bombastic inanity becomes disturbingly hilarious.
