With Saint Patrick’s Day fast approaching, the time has come to prep ourselves for that annual celebration of dressing in your best green t-shirt and wandering around while shouting at things. To celebrate the holiday where everyone is Irish (except, of course, people who aren’t Irish) Bier Magazine has amassed together a collection of seven Irish brews to make your Saint Patrick’s Day at least somewhat authentic.
On the outskirts of London, England at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, a nearly 300 year old brew house is getting kicked back into shape as part of the £6 million Discover Greenwich renewal project. The folks over at Meantime Brewing Company, a Greenwich based microbrewery run by master brewer Alistair Hook, have renovated the historically rich compound, installing eight giant copper brewing vessels, converting the space into The Old Brewery, an active brewpub and restaurant.
Sacramento, California will celebrate its inaugural beer week from Feb. 22 to Feb. 28. Sacramento native and beer writer Dan Scott and a group of volunteering beer lovers have planned more than 150 events in up to 75 venues throughout the Sacramento area as well as neighboring towns Nevada City, Auburn and Roseville. Events will include beer tastings, beer pairings, dinners, educational seminars, festivals, trivia nights and more.
Arizona State University (ASU) is not too happy with Anthony Canecchia, owner and brew master of SanTan Brewing Company. ASU threatened to sue SanTan if they do not change the name of the brewery’s Sun Devil Ale, their most popular beer that takes its name from the school’s mascot.
The San Francisco Brewers Guild will be hosting the second annual SF Beer Week from Feb. 5 to Feb. 12. For a full seven days, SF Beer Week will transform the city into one giant watering hole for beer drinkers near and far. More than 200 events will be taking place in about 100 venues throughout the city, including beer festivals, beer dinners, food pairings, homebrew demonstrations, tasting seminars and pub crawls by foot, bike and train.
Closing out its third touring year, the popular Beer, Bourbon and Barbecue Festival traveled well above its comfortable stomping grounds south of the Mason-Dixon Line in an effort to show the Yankees up in New York City a thing or two about eating and drinking your way into a coma. The show offered up a generous supply of over 60 beers, 40 bourbons and a selection of barbecue and the fixings from pit masters up and down the East Coast.
Oklahoma City based COOP Ale Works will be celebrating the one year anniversary of the completion of their first batch of commercially brewed beer on Jan. 9. To commemorate the event, co-founders J.D. Merryweather, Mark Seibold and Daniel Mercer will be holding an open house and beer tasting to the public to show their appreciation to the people of Oklahoma City who made their first year of business such a resounding success.
The beer industry underwent a major boom over the past ten years. The sudden burst of popularity that craft beers received in the 1990s bled over into the following decade. Even giants like Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors tried to pry their way into the craft beer game with lines of specialty beers or macrobrews cleverly concealed as an indie startup (Looking your way, Blue Moon). With the new year upon us, Bier Magazine has put together a list of some of the best or most influential brewers of the last decade.
