The 4th annual NY Brewfest, which usually takes place at South Street Seaport, is hopping over to Governors Island this year on June 19.

David Katleski, president of the NY State Brewers, said that the committee was looking to expand the festival. “It was a mutual understanding among NY Brewfest that a bigger venue was needed,” Katleski said. With 350,000 square feet, the expected 10,000 guests will have a lot more room to take part in the festivities. “We couldn’t have picked a better location to have out beer festival.”

Since NY Brewfest will be at a bigger location this year, the number of breweries participating has increased. Last year, 75 breweries participated, but this year there will be 150.

NY Brewfest has also expanded with the festivities. This year the festival will have five live bands performing and offer seminars featuring tastings of limited edition beers such as “Utilizing State Hops,” “Seasonal Beer Discussion, ” and “Women in Beer.” Katleski said he is proud that with the additional breweries and space, the festival will be “more educational.” “This is more than just a drinking fest,” Katleski said. “It really is an opportunity to educate and get the brands from small brewers out there.”

Tickets are $55 (including water taxi transport to and from Governors Island) and are available online or at any one of the seven Heartland Brewery locations in New York City. A limited number of $75 Connoisseurs’ Pass tickets, which allow 2:30 PM access to the event and a special tasting glass, are also available. Music Lover tickets (includes water taxi transportation but no beer sampling) are available for $25.
