SanTan Brewing Co. Holds Contest to Avoid Lawsuit

Arizona State University (ASU) is not too happy with Anthony Canecchia, owner and brew master of SanTan Brewing Company. ASU threatened to sue SanTan if they do not change the name of the brewery’s Sun Devil Ale, their most popular beer that takes its name from the school’s mascot.

Unwilling to take part in a costly courtroom battle against ASU’s army of lawyers, Canecchia agreed to change the name, and has now turned to the community to help re-name his now moniker-less pale ale.

SanTan Brewing Co. is holding a naming contest where SanTan fans can flex their beer doused creativity muscles to come up with both a name and label for the beer formally known as Sun Devil. “We wanted to get our regulars and the public involved in the process,” Canecchia said. “We’re just trying to have a lot of fun with it.”

Competition is already fierce. SanTan already has nearly 1,000 submissions stacking up in their offices and there’s still over a month to go until the deadline. “It’s killing me in fax paper,” Canecchia chuckled.

Several submissions take digs at ASU’s assault on the unassuming brewer, with names that Canecchia declined to divulge. “There’s, trust me, quite a few unmentionable and definitely unnamable suggestions out there.”

Despite the legal mess, Canecchia says he holds no grudges against ASU, just their lawyers and administrators. The brewer still proudly flies an ASU flag outside of his brewpub in Chandler, and will always consider himself a Sun Devil. “[The name was] something that I truly believe was a reflection of our involvement in the local community. I really believe the name Sun Devil is reflective of the phoenix, Metro-Pheonix, the Valley of the Sun.”

SanTan are accepting entries until Feb. 28, 2010. The winner will be chosen by Canecchia and his partner, Aaron Sanchez. Winners will receive a free keg of their newly named beer (or nearly free depending on the legality of giving away a keg of beer).

SanTan Brewing Company opened in September 2007. It’s located in Historic Downtown Chandler, Arizona. SanTan features six of its own hand crafted brews on tap at all times, full liquor bar, including a wide selection of Scotch and Whiskeys.

Arizona State University did not return phone calls for comments.
