Although the Morgan Freeman/ Jack Nicholson movie Bucket List had to be in the back of the minds of the producers of this MTV series, The Buried Life (Mondays at 10pm) has a life all its own.

The reality show is one of MTV’s latest creations to hit television. In it the adventures of four guys, Ben, Dave, Duncan, and Jonnie are chronicled as they attempt to complete their list of things they want to do before they die, but unlike Nicholson and Freeman they are not waiting till their sunset years to get them done. The guys are not stopping with their own list of dreams though. For every dream they succeed in crossing off the list they will make the dream of a total stranger come true.

In the season opener they decided to try and take #6 off the list- crash a party at the Playboy Mansion. Two of them planned on trying to impersonate a soccer star while the other two were going to hide out in a cake dressed as Oompa Loompas (in line with the theme of the party).
While walking around one of the guys stops a random stranger and asked what he would like to do before he died. The long time school teacher said he wished he could do more to help the school he worked at and mentioned that his classroom is in desperate need of a computer.

Watching the guys devise and carry out their plans to crash the Playboy Mansion was definitely entertaining, but their desire to do something of value for a random person is admirable and inspiring. It would be easy to just take money from the network to complete the tasks, but that is not what these guys did. They actually worked the streets as performers to raise enough money to buy one new computer for the classroom.

This show is refreshing and something which MTV should be proud of. Instead of creating another reality show with people partying they are doing something with a strong social purpose. What makes this show stand out above the rest though is that it portrays regular people working to help others, not just rich people giving away money.

People will tune in to see if the guys get away with their crazy antics. People should tune into see the good deeds they do. Hopefully these guys will be on for the duration of their list and then some.

Beer: Urban People’s Common Lager from the Linden Street Brewery in Oakland, CA- this California Common brew is made with a special type of lager yeast that works well at warmer temperatures. The hops tend to dominate the aroma and flavor giving it a good, full bodied flavor. At 5.5% ABV this beer will not knock you out too early in the night either.
