HumbugWychwood, Bah Humbug! Christmas Ale
Oxfordshire, England

Aside from its excellent brown ale Hobgoblin, English brewer Wychwood’s line up of beers is less than stellar. Knowing this, we came to the brewer’s Dickensian themed Christmas ale with quiet sense of trepidation. Thankfully, Wychwood pulls through this time as the Bah Humbug! Christmas Ale has a nice balance of spice and malt with just enough hops to round out the flavor. It’s probably the best holiday beer on this list that would go along well with a Christmas feast. The hops keep the sweetness in line and while it’s undeniably spiced with the usual Christmas spices, there isn’t enough there to overwhelm the palate. However, Bah Humbug! does have an odd pour, as its muddy brown color and bits of who knows what floating around the glass sours an otherwise solid holiday beer. But as we all learned from the parable of Ebenezer Scrooge, true value lies within the heart. That’s the moral of “A Christmas Carol,” right?
