Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew – Rating: B+
This show is as close to real reality than most reality shows in construction today. What keeps it from being totally real is the genre itself. No one goes on reality television without some expectation of stardom, fame, or popularity so believing 100% in the therapy relationship is kind of hard here.
The patients are all people of relative fame already. The first guy we meet is a pro surfer that spends so much time indulging his addiction that he has lost everything he once had as a former world champion. Another guy was the drummer for the rock band Skid Row. A former Miss Teen USA, an-ex Sports Illustrated Cover Girl, a porn star, a former playmate, and a model/dancer linked to other faux celebrity types such as the man formerly known as Mr. Brittany Spears (K-fed) tell their stories as they are admitted it. Last but not least, is a film director that was imprisoned at one time after pretending to be royalty for five years.
These are all people that have either been in the spotlight before or have been dancing around the fringes of it; a show like this could out them smack dab in the middle of what they really want. Or they could be actually getting the treatment that they so desperately need.
That being said, Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew has the potential to do a lot of good in the lives of these 8 people. From the tales that they tell is apparent that they are in need of help. Dr. Drew seems to have created an environment that is safe and conducive to therapy as long as the patients are receptive to it. He takes a clinical yet open view of the patients and it is easy to see that he and his staff truly want to do what they can to make the lives of these people better.
How good this will be on television I do not know. Most reality shows are more like faux-reality; they are situations which are created involving people. Even though they are staged they are not scripted so the ensuing dialogue is real.
With this show it depends on the view that people want to take with it. From a human standpoint it appears as if the treatment is real and the issues are genuine. From the cynical television viewer standpoint they have staged chaos with eight people sharing a house that can’t keep their hands off of people. Since sex sells and these people all have sexual addiction issues what do we expect to happen with them being cooped up together?
Either way, the drama in the show is moving and very emotional. Tune in Sundays at 10pm on VH1 for more.
Beer: Clausthaler Extra Herb Premium- it would seem inappropriate to pair this show with anything but a non-alcoholic beer and this brew from Germany is better than many of the alcohol-full beers that I have ever had. With more of a bitter flavor than malty one, this beer is fuller than expected from a non-alcoholic type beer and comes with none of the usually off-flavors that are common in that genre. At only .5% ABV the chances for addiction are slim to none with this one.
