Extract – Rating: A-
In this Labor Day opener, Mike Judge clocks in with another film based off of the disgruntled employee–or in this case–employer. Extract mainly takes place in Reynold’s Extract factory, which is owned by a buttoned-up and beaten-down chem nerd Joel (Jason Bateman). While the film may not achieve Office Space cult status, it offers a steady stream of laughs and holds its own against other summer comedies.
The film centers on Joel, a self-made factory owner who could use a little action in the boardroom and the bedroom. At the office Joel is bored with the uninteresting nature of flavor extracts. After work he races home to beat what he calls the 8 PM “sweat pant deadline.” Once his wife Suzie (Kristen Wiig) puts on her gray fuzzies, his chance to take them off plummets. Adding to his office woes, factory worker Step (Clifton Collins, Jr.) loses one of his testicles in an accident at the plant, and a hot new temp, Cindy (Mila Kunis), reminds him of what he isn’t getting at home.
To save his sanity, Joel vents to bartender and self-proclaimed spiritualist Dean (Ben Affleck). Dean recommends that Joel hire a male gigolo to seduce Suzie. If the gigolo succeeds Joel can pursue Cindy without any remorse. At first Joel refuses, but after a little help from Dean’s “friend,” Special K, Joel agrees and hires Brad (Dustin Milligan) to pose as his new pool cleaner. His plan backfires when Brad actually has sex with Suzie and Joel wishes they hadn’t. Meanwhile, problems at the office continue when Step decides he wants to sue the factory. Overwhelmed by his wife’s infidelity and the office drama, Joel’s entertaining breakdown commences.
Judge’s office movie 2.0 packs flavorful fun in every comedic bite. Bateman’s typical nice guy act was endearing and Affleck’s turn as a druggie bartender was surprisingly funny. Even Gene Simmons made a hilarious cameo as Step’s lawyer. Add to the mix a moronic gigolo and a nosy neighbor, and you’ve got a refreshing and funny film that had more than penis jokes to back it up (listen up, Judd Apatow).
Beer Pairing: Imitate the “nutty” characters in the film with a Goose Island Nut Brown Ale. This beer has chocolate, honey and tobacco flavors and mixes both imported and domestic malts. Eat it with a nice piece of steak and call it a meal.
