the diving bell 71709 (3)Sunnyside, Queens has been long known among locals – and adventurous travelers – to be an enclave for a great deal of the borough’s Irish and Romanian immigrants. And on both sides of Queens Blvd, the borough’s main thoroughfare, there’s a ten or fifteen block stretch of Irish pubs where you’ll hear the familiar Irish brogue and where the Guinness is always poured with the perfect head. Although the Diving Bell has gone through a number of name changes and décor changes – I last remember the place as Tailor’s Hall – there’s been a couple of constants: they have cheap drink specials and they’ve routinely hosted local musicians on the weekends in an extremely intimate setting. However, some of the warmth and character of the place when it was known as Tailor’s Hall has been unfortunately sucked away and traded for a cheesy nautical motif – a motif that’s been done countless times before, whether ironically or sincerely. The beer list here is fairly standard for most pubs across the city with the exception of Hoegaarden which seems to be extremely popular in this part of town as an increasing number of bars offer it.

The ambience leaves much to the imagination and sometimes the crowd here can be a bit standoffish to the point of discomfort – depending on the day and time. During the day, the crowd consists of locals, construction workers and older folks and later on in the evenings the crowds get a lot younger although not nearly as interesting. If you come here alone, you’d probably end up not talking to many people at all so you should come with a friend or two – or come with a book or something. Come here to catch some of the area’s most interesting local acts in an extremely intimate setting. Plus the Guinness here is poured so beautifully that you must enjoy it.

As far as their beer offerings, there are a few interesting options along with the standard Irish pub offerings. On tap the Diving Bell offers Guinness, Smithwick’s, Stella Artois, Budweiser, Bud Light, Blue Moon, Brooklyn Lager, Bass Ale, Spaten Oktoberfest and Hoegaarden. And they offer Budweiser, Bud Light, Coors Light, Heineken, Corona, Beck’s, Michelob Ultra, Amstel Light, Magner’s, O’Doul’s Non-Alcoholic, Miller Genuine Draft, Miller Light and Smirnoff Ice.

Pros: Payment Options, Some of their Beer Offerings, Live Music

Cons: Crowd, Ambience, Décor

Rating: 2.5 out of 5
