Shootin’ The Boot – The Churchill Cup

travisThe Churchill Cup came to Colorado!  Last month, rugby teams from around the world competed for international bragging rights.  This year was the the seventh time the tournament was held and the first time all matches were held in the same state.

Named for former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the idea for a major North American tournament came about after the English North American tour in 2001.  In order to give one of Europe’s most popular sports more exposure in the Americas, an alliance was formed between USA Rugby, Rugby Canada, and the English Rugby Football Union with the first Cup held in 2003.

Teams from Canada, the U.S., and England compete every year; since the inception of the tournament Ireland, Argentina, Scotland, New Zealand, and Georgia have also had teams in attendance.  This year six teams from Canada, the U.S., England, Ireland, Georgia, and Argentina competed for the cup with games played on June 6, 10, 14, and 21.

The Beer

All training and no fun would make the game more like- well, football.  For the players, enjoying a good beer after the game is almost as important to fans enjoying a good beer while watching the game.

Whatever their national flavor the different members of the various rugby teams will not have trouble finding a good beer to soothe the aches and pains of training and playing for the Cup during their stay in the Denver metropolitan area.  Denver is home to a host of brewers making a variety of craft beers.

Fans and players from Georgia will find solace in a local beer, Blue Paddle Pilsner.  This straw colored beer from the New Belgium Brewing Company pours with a pretty decent head.  Malty in taste with a bit of German hops thrown in for balance, this medium bodied beverage will do much to refresh the thirst of fans and players alike after a hot game.

Another local beer that teams will find inviting is the Breckenridge 471 ESB.  This Scottish style ale will appeal to those in search of amber colored ale with a nutty, somewhat malty aroma to it.  Hints of citrus will tease the taste buds along with the well balanced hops and malt.  Mildly bitter, this local brew made by the Breckenridge Brewery will leave a few rugby players and fans wanting another round.woodycreek

The Flying Dog Brewery offers a great summer brew, Woody Creek White.  More on the malty rather than hop flavored side this light beer goes down real easy in the dog days of summer.  Only in its third year of production, this Belgian style Wit beer brewed with coriander and bitter orange peel will go a long way to toasting a thrilling victory or an agonizing defeat.

So rugby players and fans of the world worry naught while in Denver for the Churchill Cup.  There will be plenty of good beer to go along with the rugby, regardless of your taste.
