funugyzIn what has to be the oldest abandoned strip mall in Parker, just behind their bright yellow sign, you’ll find Funugyz. If I had ever pictured a local version of “Cheers,” it would have to be Funugyz. Go there more than once and you’ll notice the same faces in the crowd and soon everyone will know your name.

This super-sized sports bar has a place for just about everyone. There are billiards tables for the pool sharks, a dance floor for the two-steppers, a bar for the liquid lovers, and an abundance of tabletops for the diners. You might call Funugyz the local Parker hangout, especially when there’s a sporting event. In fact, I’m sure you all 40 of their TV sets are tuned to the NBA playoffs right now.

My first trip to Funugyz began with a lesson in pronunciation. Funugyz is not pronounced “Fun You Guys” like it might look, but rather “Fuh-new-gees.” I also learned that Funugyz is actually part of a chain of sports bars owned by the BUFF Brothers Restaurant Group out of Denver. The Brothers own
Gibby’s, Dirk’s, College Inn, Pifler’s, and another Funugyz in Arizona.

Jim Tuson has been a regular at Funugyz since it opened. “Funugys is a schizophrenic bar,” Tuson says.  “If you are there between noon and 7 PM you will find an older crowd – mid thirties to mid fifties – from all walks of life – blue collar to upper class – that get along without pretense. After 9 pm though, get your “kiddy card” out. This is when the 21 through 35 crowd shows up, typically along with a DJ. Funugyz has an average selection of beers on tap and a decent menu including the best Buffalo wings in Parker.”

If you’re looking for cool new microbrews or a broad selection of imports, this is probably not the place to be. Funugyz has a full bar with the usual brews on tap, including Coors and Budweiser products. Surprisingly, the extensive menu at Funugyz features some tasty selections. The burgers are big and juicy and go great with an ice cold Blue Moon. The desserts are not bad either.
Funugyz offers daily specials, including Ladies’ Night on Tuesday and all day happy hour on Monday.

Pros: Amazing food, friendly staff

Cons: Limited beer selection, noisy and crowded

Rating: 2.5 out of 5
