Ten Romantic DVDs That’ll Get You Hott
Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and many men feel that annual obligation to sit through a romantic movie with their honeys. This year, why don’t you order in some great take out, a bottle of her favorite beverage and your own brew, and get a couple of DVDs that won’t bore you to tears or make you laugh in the wrong places. This annotated list of ten romantic movies will not only make your lady think you’re Mr. Sensitive, but will keep you awake through the video.
1. Cold Mountain (2003) (Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger) Apart from the hoopla over the romance between Kidman and Law, this film has some quirky characters. Renee Zellweger’s rendering of gutsy Ruby Thewes won her an Oscar, and the portrayals of some of the screwy mountain folk are worth a look at. Besides, the movie is laced with a great old-time soundtrack, performed by Riley Bagus, Norman and Nancy Blake, Tim O’Brien, and Jack White.
2. Truly, Madly, Deeply (1990) (Alan Richman, Juliet Stevenson) This one is bent, but warm and funny. It’s about a woman who’s cellist husband dies and haunts her.
3. Casablanca (1942) (Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, Sidney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Claude Rains) This classic has enough romance to please your lady, but you’ll enjoy the performances of these veteran actors. Who can resist Greenstreet, Lorre, and Bogart?
4. Ladyhawke (1985) (Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Leo McKern) This medieval fantasy follows two lovers who have been cursed into the forms of a wolf and a hawk. It’s a bit dark but fun for fantasy lovers.
5. Dead Again (1981) (Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Andy Garcia, Robin Williams) This paranormal story has great performances and a suspenseful plot, with the romance woven throughout.
6. High Spirits (1988) (Peter O’Toole, Steve Guttenberg, Bevery D’Angelo, Liam Neeson, Daryl Hannah) This is one of my favorites. O’Toole tries to palm off his Scottish castle as haunted to a feuding American couple, only to realize that it already has a pair of ghosts.
7. Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005) (Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie) This romance about a pair of assassins will give both you and your honey some eye candy, but has great action scenes.
8. The Big Easy (1987) (Dennis Quaid, Ellen Barkin, Ned Beatty, John Goodman) This mystery mixes in a romance between a police detective and an attorney. Great cajun soundtrack!
9. Princess Bride (1987) (Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest, Carol Kane, Billy Chrystal, Robin Wright Penn) This is the ultimate cult fantasy film. It has romance and great slapstick and wit.
10. Chocolat (2000) (Juliette Bionche, Alfred Molina, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp) Though the story has depth, about how one person can loosen up a whole community, it is worth viewing just to see Johny Depp play Django Reinhardt guitar!
