With many thanks to Okayama University, the Russian Academy of Science, and Sapporo Breweries, there is a new type of beer that is truly out of this world. Space beer, takes the brewing industry to a whole other level. In contrary to the belief that it is brewed from outer space, the beer is made with barley ingredients grown in space. It has no additives and a 5.5% alcohol content.

Junichi Ichikawa, Managing Director for strategy at Sapporo Breweries, says Space Beer is so unique that the barley used is only space produce, and there are no other ingredients (such as rice)“There’s really no beer like it because it uses 100 per cent barley. Our top seller is the Black Label brand, using additional ingredients such as rice. This one doesn’t, and is really a special beer,” Ichikawa said.

One hundred litres of Space Beer has been produced as a result of the successful microgravity barley farming effort. Although the Space Beer is not commercially available yet, 60 lucky beer lovers will have the exclusive chance to taste the beer in Tokyo next month.
