Suffolk County Legislator Proposes a Ban on Drinking Related Board Games
March 11, 2010 – 11:18 AM | One Comment |

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi (R-Bay Shore) proposed a new law which would ban stores such as Spencer’s Gifts and Gadgets and Gizmos from selling drinking related board games to those under the age of 21.

Cilmi has found that drinking games like beer pong have become gradually more accepted and admired in recent years and has led to the development of video games and even a World Series of Beer Pong. The newly elected legislator is seeking an alternative for controlling drinking game products, including age restrictions, locating these products into a separate age-restricted room, and even creating a special tax. “My hope is that these stores voluntarily join this fight by removing these products from their shelves,” Cilmi said. “If not, we will explore all options,” he added.

According to the resolution introduced by Cilmi, “State Law prohibits the sale of alcohol to persons under 21 years of age, therefore common sense should dictate that the sale of drinking games should also be prohibited.”  Therefore, he has also come to the conclusion that these drinking games promote binge drinking, which could lead to alcohol poisoning and negatively impact the lives of adolescents. “I am not one who would typically advocate for regulation of our free market, but this is simply common sense,” Cilmi said. “Our children’s lives are at risk.”

Students like Brianna Lodato of Suffolk Community College agree with Cilmi’s proposal. “Underage drinking is a serious problem. There are too many drunk driving related crashes and deaths,” Lodato said. “If the proposal on banning drinking games such as beer pong goes through, I would feel it would be for the better because drinking board games and beer pong targets the younger community. If it was gone then maybe there wouldn’t be as many young kids drinking.”

However, other students like Carola Moran of SUNY Stony Brook believe that this new law would not stop underage drinking. “Banning the sale of games is not going to get a 17-year-old to give up on drinking,” Moran said. “They will just find more creative ways to have fun drinking like Flip cup, Quarters and Kings.”

“People are going to keep drinking because it is a social issue, all young people drink, whether it is here, Spain, or in China,” said Anna Alventosa, also a student at SUNY Stony Brook.

There’s something to be said for finding house-brewed tap beer in the heart of a metropolis. Given that craft-brewing is still shy of the mainstream, and the space required to brew beer in appreciable quantities, and the cost of said space in said heart of said metropolis, one must first of all be grateful for the entrepreneurial initiative that makes the urban brew-pub happen.

I used to know a fish monger who called lobster the cockroaches of the sea. Now that was his personal opinion and I gave him that. Obviously he never had one pan roasted in foamy brown butter with a generous splash of Jameson whiskey and another of cream.

This classic Irish dish is great for the month of March. Always buy your lobsters live and personally I enjoy a smaller, younger crustacean. I feel the meat is sweeter and more tender.

The Red Biddy from Biddy Early Brewery in Ireland is the perfect brew for a rich seafood dish like this. It is sweet and light, for an Irish beer. The red is brewed with chocolate, crystal malts and bog myrtle from the mountains instead of hops for flavor

Sink the Bismarck from the good people at BrewDog Brewery in Scotland- it will take a few of these beers (with a 4.1% ABV) to make this show entertaining. Brewed with the idea of creating a beer with an incredibly high ABV, it is also surprisingly tasty. Also surprisingly smooth, Sink the Bismarck has a pleasant fruity, spicy aroma to go with its subtle sweet, malt like taste backed up by a strong hops flavor.

The New Old Brewery at The Royal Naval Academy, Greenwich

On the outskirts of London, England at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, a nearly 300 year old brew house is getting kicked back into shape as part of the £6 million Discover Greenwich renewal project. The folks over at Meantime Brewing Company, a Greenwich based microbrewery run by master brewer Alistair Hook, have renovated the historically rich compound, installing eight giant copper brewing vessels, converting the space into The Old Brewery, an active brewpub and restaurant.
